You might not pay much attention to your hips, but you need them every day. What are you doing to make sure that you still have your hips when you’re older? Here are 5 ways to improve hip health so you could make sure that your hips are still moving and grooving in your future.
Monitor Your Weight
The more weight your hips must carry the more your cartilage around the hips has to hold. Your cartilage around the waist will break down if you put too much pressure on it. According to www.prevention.com, “Every 10 pounds of weight gain above the waist results in an extra 75 to 100 pounds across the joints.” It’s even been found that losing just 11 pounds over a 10-year period has been shown to decrease the risk of painful arthritis in women by 50%.
Exercise can improve the muscles surrounding your back and hips. Your hips will be in a better position if the core surrounding them is strong as it can support them and keep them in alignment. It’s important to vary the types of exercises you perform to make sure you don’t overdo it in one area. Too much exercise can be just as bad as not enough and you don’t want to cause unneeded strain and tear in the muscles that are supporting your hips.
Flexibility can help you avoid injuries in the hips and protect your muscles from injury. Stretching goes hand in hand with exercise and helps keep the muscles strong and healthy. If you do not stretch muscles can become tight and shorten. If you exercise without stretching it can strain and damage your muscles. Make sure that you focus your stretching on the lower area at a minimum. Stretching your upper body is also a great idea. Also, make sure that you stretch at least three or four times a week.
Know Your Limits
Your body knows when you need to stop. Make sure you stop doing something if it hurts. If you’re experiencing any pain, it is not a good idea to keep doing it. Make sure that what you are doing does not end up worsening your condition. You do not have to stop the activity altogether; if it hurts just make sure you modify it to make it less strenuous on your body.
Find a Doctor
It’s always going to help if you see a doctor in the early stages of injury, and your hips are no exception. You will save a lot of time and money if you see a trained professional. If you have consistent hip pain consult an orthopedic doctor. Most of the time you won’t even need surgery and can receive tips on what exercises you can do to improve your hips and what movements to avoid.
So, make sure that you monitor weight, exercise, stretch, know your limits, and consult a doctor when you need it. As long as you follow these steps you will have your hips a lot longer than you expected.

Hi Gita, I wish I had started these things earlier in life. Now that I’m in my early to mid 40’s I’m already experiencing problems with my back and hips. This is excellent advice to follow. Oh and on a side note, I love your blog <3
