You’ve noticed your teeth getting closer and closer together for a while now, and they look like they will be overlapping soon. There are a few things you can do to slow down crowded teeth and depending on the situation, these things may prevent the condition. Here are 5 Ways to Prevent Crowded Teeth!

1.Floss

Flossing can help slow down the crowding of teeth. When you floss it improves the health of your gums and can help bring down possible swelling from any infections. Make sure you floss daily so your gums get the attention and care they need. In many cases, flossing will slow down the crowding.

2.Brush

Brushing along the gumline can also help slow your teeth from crowding against each other. Your gums are the area that is usually left out during brushing, so it’s important to give them the care they need. Brushing your gums and your teeth with help improve your dental health in every way, so make sure your daily routine includes brushing twice a day and flossing at least once.

3.Don’t Sleep on Your Stomach

When you sleep on your stomach it can put a lot of pressure on your mouth which pushes your teeth into each other. One way you can prevent the pressure and still get to sleep on your stomach some nights is to try different positions when you sleep. The repetitive pressure of sleeping of your stomach is what creates the crowding so if you make the pressure less repetitive the crowding effects will decrease.

4.Missing teeth

When you lose teeth, your other teeth will move into the now empty space. This can create crowding. If you have missing teeth, a good solution is to replace the missing tooth. There are many ways to replace missing teeth such as implants, dentures, or bridgework. Depending on which teeth are missing, your dentist will provide a solution that will be the least painful and the best option for you.

5.Keep foreign objects out of your mouth

Chewing on objects such as pens, fingernails, and toothpicks can move your teeth and create misalignment. The outward pressure from constantly chewing on something is what moves your teeth out of place, this can be avoided by being aware of what objects you are putting in your mouth. There are many good and bad habits that affect how your teeth naturally move. Sucking on your lower lip can crowd your lower jaw teeth, and sucking on your thumb can increase the space between upper front teeth which creates crowding for the back teeth.

Flossing, brushing, sleeping on your back, doing something about missing teeth, and keeping those pens out of your mouth will help slow your teeth from crowding. But, of course, mesial drift, which is where teeth move forward toward the front of your mouth, will always be in play. In extreme cases, you can get treatment such as tooth extraction or braces. It’s also important to note that some people simply have mouths that are too small for their teeth and will need to get special dental treatment in order to prevent crooked teeth.
